Why Areteworks
Medical device expertise. A deeper understanding of your users.
Healthcare UX design starts with how people actually work. We study the decisions, handoffs, interruptions, and moments of uncertainty around your product—not only what happens on its screen.
With 25+ years of experience designing Class II and Class III medical devices and healthcare applications, we turn those findings into clearer workflows, predictable product behavior, and prototypes tested early with intended users.
You work directly with senior practitioners, alongside your product, engineering, and human factors teams, with research and design documentation to support FDA submissions when needed.
Healthcare UX services
From the right questions
to a usable product.
Bring us a new product, an existing design, or a workflow that needs a closer look. We shape the engagement around the decisions your team needs to make.
See the workClinical workflow design
Understand how care is delivered around your device: preparation, operation, handoffs, interruptions, and recovery. We translate that context into workflows that reflect the way clinicians, patients, and caregivers need to use the product.
Current- and future-state workflows, task flows, recovery paths, and prioritized design opportunities.
Healthcare UX design
Turn research into a clear, consistent experience across medical devices and healthcare applications. We design task sequences, information hierarchy, feedback, and product behavior so users can understand what is happening and what to do next.
Design concepts, screen flows, interaction specifications, and a visual system your team can build on.
User research
Observe intended users in context and ask questions about the work they actually do. We investigate clinical needs, environmental constraints, workarounds, and the gap between a planned workflow and real use.
Research findings, user needs, task analysis, and evidence to guide product priorities.
Anxiety Maps
When useful for the project, we map where people hesitate, feel uncertain, improvise, or lose confidence. These signals help us investigate why confidence breaks down and identify design responses that make product behavior more predictable.
A map connecting observed moments of uncertainty with their context, research questions, and design opportunities.
Prototyping
Make important design decisions tangible before development. Interactive prototypes let your team and intended users explore task sequences, system states, and recovery from unexpected situations.
Interactive prototypes and documented design decisions, refined through early feedback.
Formative evaluation & validation support
Evaluate designs with intended users while there is still time to improve them. We use formative findings to guide revisions and coordinate with your human factors and regulatory teams when summative validation is needed.
Usability findings, recommended design changes, and research and design documentation within the agreed scope.
Selected healthcare UX work
Experience with the work behind the device.
From contrast injection to cardiovascular systems, real clinical demands shape our design decisions.

Medrad · Mark 7 Arterion
Clarity when timing matters.
In the cath lab, operators need to anticipate each injection phase while keeping their attention on the procedure. Areteworks combined behavioral research and workflow analysis to shape the Arterion touchscreen experience.
We introduced a timeline preview of upcoming phases and aligned the setup workflow with the syringe-loading system and hand controller.
From research to design Understand the sequence. Show what happens next. Connect the on-screen experience with the device.

COBE Cardiovascular
A clearer view of a complex procedure.
Perfusionists must monitor multiple parameters and respond as priorities change during surgery. Areteworks observed their work and mapped the sequence from pre-bypass setup through maintenance and weaning.
That research shaped a console with critical parameters kept in view, controls organized around the perfusion circuit, and alarms with distinct levels of urgency.
From research to design Follow the phases of care. Keep critical information visible. Make changes in priority easier to recognize.
Explore the COBE projectOur methodology
Research that carries through to development.
Five connected stages. Evidence guides the design, and what we learn from users guides the next iteration.

Immersion
Understand the whole workflow.
Observe intended users and stakeholders in context. Document the environment, decisions, handoffs, interruptions, and workarounds that should inform the design.

Concept design
Turn findings into a clear direction.
Use story mapping, Anxiety Maps when useful, and user workflows to connect research with design decisions. Explore concepts that account for system states, sequencing, and recovery.

Prototyping & usability testing
Learn while the design can still change.
Build interactive prototypes and evaluate them with intended users. Use observed difficulties and feedback to refine the workflow and answer important design questions early.

Visual design
Make information easier to understand.
Create a consistent visual language through hierarchy, typography, color, and iconography. Carry that language across the device or application and its important states.

Development
Carry the design intent into the product.
Work alongside engineering with design specifications, guidance, and reviews. Resolve implementation questions together and keep the intended user experience in view.
