Information Visualization in the User Interface design industry

Information visualization has become a highly marketable skill within the UI industry. The ability to take the often vast and complex amounts of data that we encounter on a daily basis and present it in a concise and understandable manner is essential to a rewarding user experience. Unfortunately too many UI designers place a higher importance on the visual aesthetics than on the information being conveyed.

The “rules” of good information visualization and communicating knowledge and data in a way that surpass words are simple enough: make sure the information visualization imparts understanding, make sure it imparts understanding better than the written word, and best of all, the best information visualization may not require computer software or any digital tools whatsoever; a pencil and paper will often suffice.
