Background
Edwards Lifesciences' HemoSphere is a hemodynamic monitoring platform used at the bedside in cardiac ICUs, ORs, and high-acuity care environments. Clinicians use it to interpret real-time data — cardiac output, SVR, SVV, mixed venous saturation — on patients whose status can change in seconds, often while managing multiple patients at once.
The existing interface had grown feature-dense over time. Critical data competed with secondary information for visual attention, and clinicians often had to look in the wrong place first to find what they needed under pressure.

Distinctive Yet Familiar
Challenge
Cardiac ICU clinicians don't have time to learn a new visual language. The redesign needed to feel immediately familiar to nurses and physicians who'd been using the legacy interface for years — while reducing visual clutter, surfacing critical signals first, and minimizing the risk of misreads in time-sensitive scenarios.
Drawing on decades of medical device experience, Areteworks translated clinician observations — "I can't tell at a glance if a patient is decompensating," "I keep looking at the wrong number first" — into a visual hierarchy that matched how clinicians actually scan information under pressure. This is the senior judgment work that turns research into a usable workflow: interpreting what clinicians say, observing what they actually do, and shaping a design around the gap between the two.

Solution
We designed a cohesive interface that prioritizes hemodynamic signals by clinical importance — keeping vital data, lab values, and alerts visually distinct without overwhelming the user. Custom dashboards adapt to role (nurse, physician, anesthesiologist) and patient context. Alarm hierarchy was redesigned to reduce alarm fatigue while preserving safety-critical alerts.
The work aligned with Edwards' Human Factors program and supported subsequent IEC 62366-1 documentation. Final outcomes included reduced visual clutter, role-based views, optimized alert prioritization, and a workflow clinicians described as immediately intuitive.
