Designing the cath-lab touchscreen for Bayer's Mark 7 Arterion
ANGIOGRAPHIC PRECISION
Background
The MEDRAD® Mark 7 Arterion is Bayer's flagship angiographic contrast injection system — used in cardiology and interventional radiology suites to deliver contrast media during diagnostic and interventional procedures, including coronary angiograms, peripheral angiography, and cardiovascular interventions.
Built on more than 40 years of legacy in the Medrad Mark series, the Mark 7 introduced major hardware advances: a lighter and more maneuverable pedestal, the Twist & Go disposable syringe for one-handed setup, and the VFlow Sterile Hand Controller for real-time flow rate control from a distance — keeping operators away from radiation exposure during injections.
The interface had to match that step-change in capability. Medrad engaged Areteworks to design the touchscreen UX — the operator-facing surface where injection programming, real-time control, and procedural safety decisions converge.
PREDICT, INFORM, CONTROL
Challenge
In a cath lab, an injection isn't a single moment — it's a sequence. Cardiologists and radiologists deliver phased injections at varying flow rates, sometimes across four phases within a single procedure, while keeping eyes on the patient, the fluoroscopy monitor, and the procedure team. The interface couldn't just confirm what was happening. It had to predict what the operator would need next, inform the team without forcing eyes off the procedure, and control injection variables in real time.
Drawing on decades of medical device experience, Areteworks ran behavioral research and clinical workflow analysis with cath-lab operators — translating what cardiologists and radiologists actually do during phased injections, not what specs say they should do. The translation moment: operators didn't need more data, they needed the right data, surfaced at the right moment, in a visual language they could read in their peripheral vision while focused on the patient.
INTUITIVE PRECISION
Solution
The redesigned touchscreen interface introduced a real-time timeline graph that previews the next injection phase — letting operators anticipate flow rate, volume, and timing transitions before they happened. Visual hierarchy was tuned for cath-lab lighting conditions, glove-friendly touch targets, and high-glance readability across the procedure room.
Setup workflow was restructured around the Twist & Go syringe loading and the VFlow Hand Controller — reducing steps, eliminating mode confusion between procedural phases, and aligning the on-screen experience with the hardware's new ergonomics.
The Mark 7 Arterion is FDA-cleared and remains in active commercial use across cath labs in the U.S. and internationally as Bayer Radiology's flagship angiographic injector.
Product Outcome
The MEDRAD® Mark 7 Arterion Injection System, with the Areteworks-designed touchscreen UX, was independently surveyed by Bayer across 125 radiology and cardiology customers in Italy, Japan, Germany, and the U.S.:
